Wine Tasting in the Langhe, an afternoon at Isolabella della Croce

There are few pleasures as quintessentially Piedmontese as an afternoon spent among the vineyards of the Langhe. Rolling hills lined with neat rows of vines, small villages perched on distant ridges, and the quiet rhythm of a landscape shaped by generations of winemakers. Wine here is not simply a product, it is heritage, patience and pride bottled together.

One of our favourite places to experience this is Isolabella della Croce.

Beautifully set between vineyards with sweeping views over the hills, the estate feels both elegant and deeply rooted in the land. The approach alone is worth the visit, winding roads, endless green in summer, golden hues in autumn, and a silence broken only by the wind moving through the vines.

The winery belongs to a Milanese owner, now in his nineties, who acquired the estate when he was already in his seventies. It was perhaps a little crazy to embark on such an ambitious adventure at that stage of life, but it was clearly driven by passion and a deep desire to give something back to the land. Today, his son Luigi oversees the estate and takes care of the winery, continuing the family’s vision and dedication.

What makes the story even more personal is that many of the wines are named after the women in his life, a tribute woven into every label. It adds something intimate to the tasting experience, behind each bottle, there is not only craftsmanship, but affection.

During a tasting, you are guided through the character of the region, from elegant sparkling wines to expressive Barbera and refined Moscato. Each glass reflects the unique terroir of the Langhe: fresh, mineral, vibrant yet balanced. Among the wines we particularly enjoy are Augusta and SuperLodo, their distinctive and refined blend, and, more recently discovered by us, their very own vermouth, a delightful addition to the estate’s range and a wonderful discovery for anyone who enjoys exploring the diversity of Piedmontese wines.

This year, Isolabella della Croce has also embarked on a new and particularly beautiful initiative, the estate has begun presenting works of art in and around the buildings, with new exhibitions being organised regularly. It is a wonderful addition to the experience. The art feels perfectly at home in this elegant and authentic setting, and the architecture and surroundings provide a beautiful backdrop in which the works can truly shine.

Sitting on the terrace with a glass in hand, overlooking the vines, time seems to soften. Conversations linger. The landscape unfolds quietly around you. It becomes clear why so many fall in love with this region, not only for its wines, but for the way of life they represent.
